Hormel Foods, Austin, Minn., has unveiled a new round of package reductions that builds on the 40 projects that the company completed in 2008 that saved 5.2 million pounds of product packaging. New packaging reduction highlights and projected yearly savings include:
• The reduction of space in Jennie-O Turkey Store burgers cartons is expected to save more than 175,000 pounds of paperboard
• Lloyd’s barbeque tubs have eliminated a paper sleeve that will save more than 660,000 pounds of paper fiber.
• Reducing the thickness of the glass in each jar of Hormel bacon bits will produce material savings of around 411,000 pounds
• Efficiency improvements to the shipping of canned foods will reduce the number of pallets needed annually by 14,573 and require less plastic and bundling film.
