U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) is standing by her bid to ban controversial plastics additive bisphenol-A (BPA) from American food packaging. Feinstein added a BPA ban to the Food Safety Bill, which was unanimously voted out of committee in November and is now pending in the Senate. Two major business groups, the Grocery Manufacturers Association and the U.S Chamber of Commerce, initially supported the bill but announced that they are ready to oppose it if the BPA ban remains. BPA has been linked by studies to cancer and reproductive maladies, but the nature and validity of the studies have been challenged. The Food and Drug Administration has previously OK’d the chemical for use, but is in the process of re-evaluating it, a process that is expected to take up to two years.
