A major food company has set ambitious goals relating to sustainability, while another one has reported good progress. Unilever recently announced a plan to “sustainably source” all of its fiber-based packaging within 10 years. Under this plan, all of Unilever’s paperboard and other fiber packaging by 2020 will either be recycled material, or certified as environmentally benign by the Forest Stewardship Council. Meanwhile, Kraft Foods announced a 30% decrease in manufacturing waste, including packaging waste, companywide. According to a statement by Steve Yucknut, vice president of sustainability, nine Kraft plants are operating on a zero-waste basis, and the company now recycles or reuses 90% of its total manufacturing waste.
