Landfilling may be the most environmentally friendly way to dispose of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, according to a report from a British consultant. The report from SRI Consulting states that in countries or regions with lots of open space and a poorly developed recycling infrastructure, like the United States, landfilling could use less overall greenhouse gases than recycling or incineration. The report, entitled “PET’s Carbon Footprint: To Recycle or not to Recycle,” also said that shipping distances are not critical, and that the practice of shipping bales of used PET bottles to China does not significantly affect their carbon footprint.
