Champagne producers are trying to join the sustainability movement by downgauging their famously massive green glass bottles, according to an article in the New York Times. The French trade association for the Champagne region has developed a bottle that, at 835 grams, is 7.2% lighter than the standard. The lighter bottle will reduce the carbon footprint by requiring less energy for transportation as well as manufacture. The industry has set itself a goal of reducing its carbon footprint by 25% by 2020, and 75% by 2050. Most of the new bottles are made by a St. Gobain plant in France’s Champagne region.
