America’s No. 1 pretzel maker has joined America’s No. 1 chip maker, Frito-Lay, in rolling out a flexible bag made with compostable plant-based material. Snyder’s of Hanover, Hanover, Pa., which has a 36% share of the U.S. pretzel market, is packaging its line of organic pretzel sticks in bags made from laminated film with 90% polylactic acid (PLA) content. Both the outer layer and the inner sealant layer have PLA content. The inner layer has a metallized inner surface for a moisture and air barrier. A bright yellow callout in the bag’s upper right corner, which contrasts with the dark brown background, bears the words “Renewable Package Made From Plants, See Back Panel.” The PLA resin is Ingeo fromNatureWorks LLC, and the film is converted byClear Lam Packaging Inc.The rollout comes on the heels of the U.S. release of a PLA-based bag forSun Chipsfrom the Frito-Lay unit of PepsiCo.
