Case study: Honey Company reaps savings from coding solution

Dutch Gold Honey has significantly improved coding coordination as a result of implementing continuous ink jet printers on its primary packaging lines and case coders on its secondary lines – networked together by Videojet Technologies’ ( www.videojet.com ) CLARiSUITE code assurance technology.

As the largest family-owned honey company in the United States, Dutch Gold Honey produces 11 honey varietals, an organic honey product and three varieties of maple syrup. As customer coding requirements grew, Dutch Gold Honey knew it needed to update its primary and secondary packaging printers with a more flexible, highly efficient coding solution. Turning to its coding partner of 30 years, Dutch Gold Honey looked to Videojet to implement a total coding solution that would coordinate printing lines, diminish coding mismatches and reduce downtime.

“Over the decades, we’ve developed a strong relationship with Videojet and knew we could count on them once again to help us improve printer coordination to reduce coding errors,” says Jim Gerlach, production scheduler for Dutch Gold Honey. “With a complete coding solution in place that’s networked with CLARiSUITE code assurance technology, not only are we preventing coding mismatches from happening, but we’ve automated a manual process so our operators are saving time on the production floor and can focus on more value-added tasks.”

Today, with a flexible coding solution in place, Dutch Gold Honey can change out a product and Videojet’s CLARiSUITE code assurance solution will automatically ensure the case coders are aligned with the codes printed from primary packaging lines. In addition, Dutch Gold Honey experiences virtually no downtime and the printers are nearly maintenance free. Adds Gerlach, “Our production line workers spend five minutes once a month to clean the new 1510 continuous ink jet printers, as opposed to 15 minutes they used to spend daily.”
