Anheuser-Busch has announced that it managed to recycle 99% of the solid waste associated with brewing and packaging its beers during 2008. This represents an improvement of nearly 22% over 2007.

Four Michigan State University students have won a $5,000 cash prize from the Glass Packaging Institute for making a YouTube video touting glass recycling. To see the video, access www.youtube.com/watch?v=JdT7idXzITE&e.

PMMI’s Education & Training Foundation granted $102,328 last year in scholarships and financial support to partner schools, packaging students and member company employees. This included $35,000 to help 575 students and 18 instructors attend last year’s Pack Expo.

Jim Anderson, CEO of Marlen Research Corp. , has been named to remain as chairman of PMMI in 2009. Anderson was nominated to fill the 2007–2008 term after Randy Spahr, recently with Goodman Packaging Equipment, resigned the volunteer position.

Coca-Cola held the formal opening Jan. 14 of what it bills as the world’s largest bottle-to-bottle recycling plant. Coke owns the 30-acre facility, located in Spartanburg, S.C., jointly with United Resource Recovery Corp., a recycling company specializing in polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

Jeff Moyer, farm director of the Rodale Institute, has been elected as the 2009 chair of U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Organic Standards Board (NOSB) . The NOSB is an advisory group that helps USDA set standards and practices for organic products.

H.J. Heinz Co. and the Quaker Oats unit of PepsiCo have received top scores among food companies in the University of Michigan’s American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI). Campbell Soup dropped near the bottom, which an ACSI report attributed to higher prices.

The Aluminum Association has announced a goal of increasing the U.S. recycling rate for aluminum beverage containers to 75% by 2015. The current recovery rate is about 54%.

Of the roughly 62 billion commercial foodservice meals and snacks consumed per year, 6% are purchased at retail outlets including food, drug, discount, department and price clubs, and an additional 7% are purchased at convenience stores, according to a new report from the NPD Group.
