The quality of a popular bioresin varies considerably among European suppliers, according to a study recently presented at a German trade show. The study, commissioned by the European Union, looked at supplies of polylactic acid (PLA). The German DKI Institute, which conducted the study, found differences in the chemical makeup of PLA resins available in five nations (Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Poland and Slovenia). These differences meant that PLA from some sources could be processed at 300° C., while resin from other sources discolored. The study, reported inPlastics News, also reported that some converters experienced success in using PLA for injection molding, while others found it impossible to work with.
