A municipal government in England has dropped a case against a leading UK grocer over “excessive” packaging. The Lincolnshire county council had cited Sainsbury’s for the packaging of its Taste the Difference Beef Roasting Joint. The cooked-meat product was packaged in a plastic tray with lid and a cardboard-sleeve label. Sainsbury’s pointed out that new packaging with 53% less material was in the pipeline, leading the council to drop the complaint two days before a scheduled hearing. A Sainsbury’s spokesperson told Letsrecycle.com, “Our customers know [sustainability] is a real area of focus for us and today's decision by the council provides recognition of that fact.”
