Report: Coke's PET recycling plant closed

A leading plastics industry publication is reporting that Coca-Cola’s showcase “bottle-to-bottle” PET recycling plant has closed. The plant in Spartanburg, S.C., opened two years ago as a joint venture between Coca-Cola and a recycling firm, amid great fanfare as the largest bottle-to-bottle plant for polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles. An article in Plastics News cited sources as saying that the entire production staff and almost all office personnel had been laid off early in March. In a statement to Plastics News, Coca-Cola said that “the joint venture...needs to be restructured” but added that “plans are in place to continue to operate” the facility, without providing details. The article said the facility has been late in payments to suppliers.
