Another major grocery chain in the United Kingdom is selling milk in plastic bags. Tesco is the latest to try the flexible pouches, which the consumer places into a specially designed pitcher that pierces the pouch. Waitrose, which became the first UK grocery to sell this milk pouch/pitcher system in 2007, dropped it last April, saying the pouches were prone to leak or break. However, UK chain Sainsbury started carrying half-gallon milk pouches in 2008 and now sells about 110,000 of them a week. The Tesco pouches sell under the brand of British milk packager Dairy Crest, while Sainsbury sells the bags as a store brand.
