Beverage Breakthroughs: Creating lighter champagne bottles

Verallia uses simulation and optimization to help reduce bottle weight while preventing breakage.
May 8, 2013
When Dom Pérignon—French Benedictine monk and winemaker—was asked to look into why sparkling wine bottles were unexpectedly bursting in the cellars of his abbey in northern France three hundred years ago, he decided to investigate the bubbles. Fermentation, it turns out, continued after the beverage was bottled, producing additional carbonation and increasing pressure. Waste can become business

Food packaging will play a key role in feeding the world in 2050
April 30, 2013

How brand enhancements can differentiate and build private-label brands

Providing relevant and critical information that packaging professionals use to make strategic decisions
April 18, 2013
In recent years, private label has increasingly gained ground in the marketplace with the majority of U.S. shoppers (86%) purchasing some type of store brand regularly . Store brands now account for one out of five items sold in US supermarkets, drug chains and mass merchandisers . In particular, product categories like salty snacks, soda, cookies and paper goods are gaining ground on their national brand counterparts. The trade-off is that the price/value point is no longer enough of a differentiator and private label brands must step up their game in an effort to meet rising shopper expectations. Addressing this progression partly means understanding shopper preference, but it’s also important to remember that consumer curiosity (and brand loyalty) is sparked through creatively designed brand packaging that leads to shelf interaction.

Product design creativity allows chocolate surprise eggs to be sold in USA

Innovative design helped Candy Treasure LLC launch Choco Treasure®, the first legal-in-the-USA chocolate egg with toy surprise
April 1, 2013
One of the lesser-known tasks for US Customs officials is confiscating chocolate “surprise eggs” from travelers. More than 60,000 surprise eggs are seized at the U.S. border each year with penalties up to $2,500 per egg. Brands such as Kinder Surprise® and Ovetto Sweet® – which contain toys inside a hollow chocolate egg -- are the top selling kids’ candy around the world. Over a billion surprise chocolate eggs are sold worldwide each year but have been illegal in the U.S. due to the 1938 Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act which prohibits inedible objects inside a candy. The design which is those products’ essence is what makes them illegal in the USA.
